Shared knowledge about elder abuse faced by LGBTQI+ older adults is limited, while there is growing attention to this issue among community, researchers, and elder abuse prevention advocates. This presentation highlights key findings from existing research and initiatives related to elder abuse and focuses on strategies to prevent and mitigate elder abuse (particularly financial exploitation). Learning Objectives
Through participating in the Resource Spotlight, participants will increase their:
- Knowledge about elder abuse and LGBTQI+ communities, including barriers and facilitators to identification and help-seeking.
- Understanding of risk factors and capacity to identify and prevent financial elder abuse in LGBTQI+ communities.
- Capacity to create prevention and support programs and practices that are inclusive and affirming of LGBTQI+ older adults.
Speakers
Dr. Celeste Pang is a sociocultural and medical anthropologist, and incoming Assistant Professor in Women’s and Gender Studies at Mount Royal University in Calgary.
Celeste’s research focuses on issues of health and healthcare access at the intersections of gender, sexuality, disability, and aging. She completed her PhD and a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Toronto, where her research examined LGBTQ+ aging and long-term care, and issues of capacity, consent, and substitute decision-making among people living with dementia who are “going it alone”. From 2020-2023, Dr. Pang was a senior researcher at a national non-profit organization where she led a national research portfolio focused on 2SLGBTQI+ aging, health, and housing issues and completed multiple funded research and knowledge mobilization projects. She co-authored the Future Us: Roadmap to Elder Abuse Prevention (led by the CNPEA) and has led research and community conversations related to LGBTQ+ communities and elder abuse.

Raeann Rideout currently serves as the Director of Strategic Partnerships for Elder Abuse Prevention Ontario. The scope of her current work focuses on engaging and building collaborative partnerships locally, provincially or nationally with agencies and organizations to build capacity to support older adults who are at-risk or experiencing abuse.
She has over 26 years of experience working in the field of aging and elder abuse providing training to front-line service providers, delivering public education sessions for older adults and facilitating collaborative projects, forums, and research initiatives on abuse prevention. Raeann co-authored the Future Us: Roadmap to Elder Abuse Prevention (led by the CNPEA). She was an instructor at Trent University for the Foundations of Elder and Prevention Course and served on the Board of the Canadian Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse (CNPEA) for over 8 years.
